My take - backed by a few years of experience in those matters - is that the perequisite to achieve success in astral projection is to strengthen the imaginary/subtle/astral body. In other words, the exercises that target this supposed body do lead to visionary experiences such as conscious (lucid) dreams and "astral projections", while merely teetering on the brink of sleep doesn't.
In one of my earlier posts, I gave a link to one rather dangerous but nevertheless effective exercise that comes from the tradition of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (http://www.wisdomsdoor.com/wb/hwb-mpe.shtml). The exercise used to work for me in the past, now I'm testing another promising technique (and will notify my fellow forum users if it proves useful). There's another useful practice described my Mark Stavish (http://hermetic.com/stavish/essays/lucid.html), although I shamefully admit I didn't give it a solid try. And the one that worked for me best so far I've described in one of my previous posts.
In contrast to the more popular view, teetering on the brink of sleep is not necessary for projection. What matters is strenghtening of the subtle body (which may or may not exist; for our practical considerations let's assume it does) by regular, most preferably pre-sleep exercises. Famed vibrations are not a gauge of success - only a handful of my travels began with them - but a good dream recall is. Vivid dreams can be - according to the contemporary occult lore - seen as a result of spontaneous ejection of the etheric matter into the worlds unseen. So if you have regular and vivid dream recall, and especially if you dream of flying, then you are ready for projecting.
Last not least, the best time to try to travel is in the early morning. When I travelled far and wide I used to wake up at 3 or 4 o'clock and, instead of falling asleep, go into the projection state. Believe me, waking up early changes everything.
And that's it: pre-sleep exercises - regular!, dream recall and waking up early are the things that you should focus on if you pursue the experience of astral projection.
